The Necessity For Sports Specific Training

By Michael Obrien

Sports specific training refers to certain workout programs that are designed to meet specific physical demands of a particular sport. These programs are often intended for young athletes who want to prepare themselves before actively participating in their choice of game. Many fitness coaches now specialize in creating these programs for different athletes with various needs.

Athletic activities are often very physically demanding. An athlete must be in great physical condition for him to fully perform all the necessary activities. The general condition of the athlete significantly influences overall performance. Different aspects of their physicality will then be given focus. These include strength, movement, and physical conditions which act as foundation for future skills.

There are some qualities that an athlete should posses in order to be effective in what they do. Athleticism is one component which includes physical and mental aspects of the person such as size, height, strength, build, and adaptability. Sport specific skills are also important and these can include skills such as dribbling, running, hitting, kicking, and others.

Practice is very important for athletes. Athletic activities require a lot of practice to learn the necessary skills and improve them more. Constant practice gives athletes an opportunity to hone their skills and use them accurately. Repeated movements are stored as patterns in the neuromuscular system. With continuous practice, these movements become more automatic for the athlete.

Beginner athletes are advised to start by focusing on physical skill development first. This can involve basic aerobic fitness, coordination, and motor skills. Some of the activities included are throwing, catching, kicking, climbing, and other related movements. Physical proficiency must be focused on first since this is the athlete's foundation in learning an athletic activity.

As the athlete grows older, there is also gradual development of skills. With continuous practice, one's focus and output also increases. Proper techniques for movement will be introduced in this period. Athletes also begin to develop their own technique that is effective for the kind of movement that must be performed. Soon enough, the athlete will reach a point where he has acquired the capability to finally play.

There are several coaches today that provide fitness programs for different athletes. Those who are interested in undergoing these physical trainings must look for a coach who is qualified. Coaches must be knowledgeable and experienced in the fitness field to design and provide suitable programs for athletes. These coaches can be found in sports facilities and fitness camps.

Each individual has physical goals in mind. With complete understanding of such goals, coaches can come up with a program that will meet such needs. Programs may include exercises that focus on major muscles and fully body strength programs. It is also optional to add conditioning work. The program should be effective and safe so as to prevent burnout or injuries.

It is recommended that sports specific training should be started at a young age. Starting early gives more time for athletes to learn skills and improve further. This also gives them more room for practicing certain techniques. During the entire period, athletes can determine their strengths and work on their weaknesses. With guidance from an effective coach, one can reach their goals.
